BARNETT SHALE (Texas)

The Barnett Shale is where the energy industry first learned to produce shale gas. Underlying roughly 5,000 square miles of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex in North Texas, the formation is estimated to contain as much as 30 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

Since 2004, Aqua-Pure has developed and refined its state-of-the-art technology for recycling wastewater in the Barnett. Because low-cost disposal wells are abundant throughout the area, we had little choice but to streamline our systems and processes to compete as cost-efficiently as possible.

The company has now recycled more than 700 million gallons of Devon Energy’s flowback and produced water in the Barnett. The treated water, which would otherwise have been injected into disposal wells and permanently removed from the hydrological cycle, is instead re-used in Devon’s drilling operations. In 2008, Devon Energy was honored with the Chairman’s Stewardship Award by the Interstate Oil & Gas Compact Commission for its water conservation initiatives in the Barnett Shale, in recognition of its partnership with Aqua-Pure.

Aqua-Pure is the only company to receive a long-term operating permit from the Railroad Commission of Texas – the state’s oil and gas regulatory authority – for recycling Barnett Shale wastewater. We have never had a single complaint or regulatory issue since our Texas operations went online in 2004.

Aqua-Pure is averaging 80-85% recovery of fresh water in the Barnett Shale.
